Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2′ to release on OTT or in theatres?

Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal- starrer ‘OMG: Oh My God! (2012’) was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed satirical comedy-dramas of the last decade. The film has garnered cult classic status over the years and hence makers decided to come up with a spiritual sequel of the film titled ‘OMG 2’.

Akshay Kumar’s fans are also quite eager to see him on the big screen again but according to latest media reports, the fans have to wait a bit longer to see their favourite star on the big screen as makers have yet to finalize whether to release the film directly on OTT or take the more riskier route of theatrical release.

There were rumours a few weeks ago that the makers had decided on a direct OTT release, but if these recent reports are to be believed, Akshay Kumar, who is also the film’s producer, has yet to make a final choice.

A report by Times Of India confirmed that the release route for OMG 2 is yet not confirmed and depends on Akshay Kumar’s decision. A source close to the team told TOI, “The makers of OMG2 have not decided on the release medium yet. But one thing is for sure. They are still figuring out the permutations. The decision to go for a straight-to-OTT release over a theatrical run cannot be taken without consulting the film’s star and co-producer Akshay Kumar. Since Akshay has been busy with the shoot of Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan in Scotland and other foreign locations, this decision of OMG2’s release has been on hold. The team will convene once Akshay is back in Mumbai, and only then will the way ahead be formalised.”

All five of Akshay Kumar’s previous theatrical releases- Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, Ram Setu, and Selfiee- were big commercial flops, therefore the chances of Akshay Kumar foregoing digital and opting for the riskier road of theatrical release are extremely minimal.

OMG 2 is written and directed by Amit Rai and also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam. The film’s plot revolves around the education system in India.
