Ashutosh Rana Addresses Controversy Surrounding Alleged Deepfake Video Supporting Political Party

Actor Ashutosh Rana recently addressed the issue of his deepfake video being used on behalf of a political party. In an interview with India Today, Ashutosh expressed concerns about the capabilities of AI, stating that anyone’s face can be added to a video, potentially leading to character assassination. The deepfake video in question featured him reciting a poem with the BJP logo, which was used for political campaigning. Ashutosh emphasized the risks associated with deepfakes, saying, “Today, your face can be added to any video, and that could even lead to your character assassination. Even if that were to happen, I would only be answerable to my wife (Renuka Shahane), my two kids, my late parents, and my guru.
Apart from them, I really don’t care. However, I must reiterate the need for caution. It takes years to build an image, but it can be destroyed in a day.” When asked if he had plans to enter politics, Ashutosh shared a different perspective, stating, “Usually, it happens the other way around, but for me, it was the opposite. Before becoming an actor, I was involved in politics. This might be why people think I would soon join Parliament. However, not everyone can be a part of the Parliament; some people are on the streets, part of the crowd. And I am one of them. I genuinely believe that when the public is awakened, that is when the Parliament truly shines.” It’s worth noting that other actors, including Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Katrina Kaif, and Rashmika Mandanna, have also been victims of deepfake videos in the past.
Currently, Ashutosh Rana is playing the role of a journalist in Raj Acharya’s film “Murder in Mahim.” This web series serves as a social commentary, exploring a chilling murder mystery and delving into the underbelly of Mumbai. The story focuses on the restoration of a broken relationship between Peter (Ashutosh Rana) and Jende (Vijay Raaz). Produced by Tipping Point Films, “Murder in Mahim” is an adaptation of Jerry Pinto’s critically acclaimed novel. The series features pivotal performances by Shivani Raghuvanshi and Shivaji Satam. “Murder in Mahim” is currently available for streaming on JioCinema. In addition to “Murder in Mahim,” Ashutosh Rana will also be seen in “War 2.”
