Vikram Vedha vs Ponniyin Selvan box office collection: Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus is off to a stronger start, but Hrithik, Saif’s action flick may win the battle
The box office is set to see yet another big clash as two of the biggest films of the year are standing face to face. Ponniyin Selvan and Vikram Vedha are the films we are talking about. The former is a pan-India film, whilst the latter is a remake of a superhit South film. So, how will the Mani Ratnam-directed picture, which stars Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, and Jayam Ravi, square up against the Pushkar Gayatgri film, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan, and how will the numbers possibly look like. Ponniyin Selvan box office collection day 1
The Mani Ratnam-directed PS1 had already received 10 crore gross from Tamil Nadu alone on day one, with both the distribution and exhibition sectors believing that the figure may have crossed 15 crore gross by the time advance booking concluded. This is simply the opening day advance number, as the Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, and Jayam Ravi blockbuster is already selling out multiple shows throughout Tamil Nadu over the weekend. Based on this, the Ponniyin Selvan box office collection on day 1 is expected to be in excess of 20 crores in Tamil Nadu alone, and in the range of 45-50 crores globally.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 seems poised to fill its coffers overseas as well, with 6.8 crore gross already pouring in for day 1 from the US and Canada alone, while the whole foreign advance booking is estimated to go as high as 20 crore gross. However, the film is performing poorly in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Hindi markets, grossing only 1 crore in total, and it is in these areas that the Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan movie look to outperform the Tamil release, particularly in the Hindi territories. While Vikram Vedha will lag behind PS1 in the North, Central, and East, it will do better in the Telugu states as well.
So, while Ponniyin Selvan is expected to have a record-breaking opening, the Vikram Vedhaa box office collection day 1 appears to be on track for a healthy start of 15-16 crore nett. That means the true test for both films will begin on day two, when word-of-mouth about their substance begins to spread.
