He is a popular actor of B Town who has got recognition with his character of Dubeyji in Mira Nair film Monsoon Wedding apart from giving some of the memorable performance in the movie Run for his act of Kauwa Biryani. He is more known for comic roles in a number of movies. Apart from being an actor he is also a director, which he set forth with the film Kya Dilli Kya Lahore. As far as his early life is concerned, he hails from Allahabad where he was born on 30th of November 1963. After his schooling, he headed to Delhi to puruse his college from the known called Kirori Mal College. Here he got the chance to get affiliated with a dramatic society called The Players. He was also seen in a couple of plays at NSD (National School of Drama).
Considering his interest in acting world, he headed to Mumbai to pursue his dreams to be in Bollywood. After a brief struggle, he got the chance to act in Ram Gopal Varma film called Jungle. Since Naseeruddin Shah has seen his performance in NSD plays hence he recommended Raaz to a known filmamker called Mahesh Mathai for the movie Bhopal Express and even to Mira Nair for her upcoming movie – Monsoon Wedding. These roles helped him to carve his niche in Bollywood thus getting a number of roles for different movies. However, as a mainstream actor, he was signed for the film called Raghu Romeo, wherein he played the character of a perplexed man from lower class Indian society. The movie was a hit and he received positive reviews about his performnace.
One of his remarkable performance came with the film Run wherein he is still remembered for the act of Kauwa Biryani. This made him popular as his act was applauded from the critics and audience a lot. In one of the movies of Aamir Khan called Delly Belly, again he got the chance to act, which really created stir abour his incredible performance. Some of his popular movies include Bombay To Goa, Mumbai Express, Welcome, Delhi 6, etc. Some of his recent movies include Kya Dilli Kya Lahore, O Teri, Department, etc, while he is currently shooting for the film called Kakki Sattai, which is a Tamil movie. So, soon, you will now find him the South Indian Cinema as well. As far as his personal life is concerned, he is married to an actress called Krishna Raaz and the couple has a daughter as well. In 2005, he was arrested in UAE for drug possession.
