Tribute to Dharmendra: Yamla Pagla Deewana Expected to Re-Release in Cinemas on January 1, 2026

Last month, Bollywood and fans mourned the loss of legendary actor Dharmendra, who passed away on November 24 at the age of 89. Now, over a month after his departure, his beloved film Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) is poised for a theatrical re-release as a heartfelt tribute.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The re-release of Yamla Pagla Deewana is a fitting homage to a man cherished by all, who left an unforgettable legacy in cinema. The film remains fresh and entertaining, making it an ideal choice for a re-run. It also features Dharmendra alongside his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, adding to its sentimental value.”Initially, the plan was to re-release the film on December 19, but due to the ongoing success of Dhurandhar, NH Studioz, the film’s rights holder, decided to postpone the release. The new tentative date for Yamla Pagla Deewana’s return to cinemas is January 1, 2026, with a final decision expected soon.

Talking about the film, it is directed by Samir Karnik, the film’s title was inspired by the iconic song “Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana” from the 1975 film Pratigya, which also starred Dharmendra. A remixed version of this hit song featured in the movie, contributing to its popularity.

Yamla Pagla Deewana follows the story of an NRI in Canada who travels to Banaras to find his estranged brother and father. The trio then head to Punjab, where they face comedic chaos while helping the younger brother win over his love interest amid her eccentric family.

The film opened to a strong ₹7.95 crores and went on to earn ₹55.28 crores in its lifetime. Praised for its humor and mass appeal, it showcased substantial roles for Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, and Bobby Deol. Its success led to two sequels, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (2013) and Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se (2018), though both failed to replicate the original’s box office magic.
