Trailer for Sardaar Ji 3 Sparks Controversy with Unexpected Casting and Release Strategy
The trailer for Sardaar Ji 3 has made headlines due to its surprising casting choices and unique release strategy. Released on social media by Diljit Dosanjh, the two-minute preview confirms that Pakistani actress Hania Aamir plays a significant role alongside Diljit and Neeru Bajwa, reprising her character as a ghost hunter in this UK-set horror-comedy. However, the trailer also reveals a significant change in distribution plans: the film will not be released theatrically in India and will instead premiere exclusively in overseas markets starting June 27. Indian fans attempting to view the trailer on YouTube are met with a geo-block message indicating restricted access.
This decision comes amid rising political tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack and India’s subsequent “Operation Sindoor.” Industry bodies such as the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) had urged the CBFC to deny certification for Sardaar Ji 3, expressing concerns over the involvement of Pakistani actors. In light of possible bans and protests, the filmmakers have opted for a safer overseas-only release strategy.
Adding to the intrigue, earlier reports suggested that Hania Aamir might be removed from the project due to the backlash. However, Diljit’s trailer release dispels those rumors, confirming Hania’s continued involvement in the film.
The Sardaar Ji franchise, launched in 2015 by Rohit Jugraj Chauhan, has garnered a cult following as one of Punjabi cinema’s pioneering fantasy-horror comedies. In this third installment, directed by Amar Hundal, Diljit and Hania lead a team of demon-fighters in a haunted UK mansion, joined by co-stars Neeru Bajwa, Gulshan Grover, Jasmin Bajwa, and Manav Vij.
Reactions online have been mixed. While some fans celebrate the on-screen chemistry between Diljit and Hania and the film’s international reach, others express disappointment, accusing Diljit of disregarding national sentiments. One Instagram user commented, “I was really excited for this movie, but not anymore. The nation should always come first,” while another stated, “I’m really proud of you, but my love for my country is paramount.”
