Doctor G Movie Review

Story:

The movie Doctor G is about a doctor who aspires to specialize in orthopedics but is admitted to the department of gynecology. Dr. Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana) chooses to bide his time in the department while getting ready to retake the admission exam rather than fully dedicating himself to his career and studies. Why? Because in his limited, archaic, and patronizing worldview, gynecology is a specialty of medicine that is practiced by, for, and by women.

In Bhopal, Uday lives with his mother (Sheeba Chadha). His early difficulties treating female patients in a local government hospital are due equally to the women’s resistance to seeing a male physician and the fact that he treats gynecology casually. Since he is the lone man among them, he also experiences trivialization from his classmates who are sure he won’t stick around. He receives harsh treatment from the HoD, Dr. Nandini Srivastava (Shefali Shah), who believes that he is not passionate about this stream. Uday further exacerbates problems by developing feelings for Dr. Fatima (Rakul Preet Singh).

Doctor G Review

Doctor G, a film by upcoming director Anubhuti Kashyap, travels with Uday along the arduous path from resistance to awakening and ultimately to total devotion.

Doctor G itself lacks the latter—complete devotion. A number of important dialogues and lots of laughter are produced by the theme. The hospital feels authentic thanks to the actors and screenwriters (Sumit Saxena, Saurabh Bharat, Vishal Wagh, and Anubhuti Kashyap herself wrote the script). Although the movie is remarkably clear on some subjects, it is unclear in its explanation of too many other topics.

The writers do a good job of maintaining Uday’s position on the propriety of a sexual relationship between an adult and a minor throughout the movie. The latter, however, does not require any physical force, and the screenplay leaves it unclear what constitutes statutory rape and why such a statute is necessary. Given the ongoing social opposition to progressive legal definitions of consent, this is a missed opportunity.

Ayushmann plays Uday convincingly despite having an erratic accent. Shefali Shah, who plays Dr. Nandini, the HOD (Head of Department), and Sheeba Chaddha, who plays Uday’s mother, are the movie’s standout stars. Rakul Preet Singh can be ignored easily as we feel like watching her in the same kinda roles in each film.

However, just when it seems like Doctor G has pulled itself together, it concludes with a silly song that, in its filming, contradicts everything that has been said up to that point. The tale of a guy who comes to respect women is told in Doctor G. Then this song appears, with Uday singing Mera dil dhak dhak karta hai while Fatima dressed in a figure-hugging, body-baring outfit, lifts her breast and thrusts it in his direction as he lies down. He is surrounded by women wearing tight, tiny clothing in the same color combination.

Doctor G Verdict:

However, all of Doctor G’s messages are quite superficial, and the filmmakers’ attempt to weave several plotlines together without allotting adequate time to each one leaves the audience unraveling the thread.
