Kriti Sanon Questions Women’s Freedom in India in a Heartfelt Independence Day Note

This year, India woke up to a wave of poignant reflections on August 15, as numerous individuals, including several celebrities, raised concerns about the safety of women in the country. The tragic Kolkata rape and murder case has ignited a nationwide outcry, with people taking to the streets to demand justice for the victim and all women. While some celebrities shared their Independence Day wishes, others, like Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Kriti Sanon, chose to address the pressing issue of women’s safety in the workplace.

Kriti Sanon took to social media on Thursday evening to share a heartfelt message, expressing her pride in the country’s progress while questioning why women continue to feel unsafe. In her post, she explained her reluctance to extend Independence Day greetings, stating, “Heavy heart and angry soul. Aaj wish karne ka mann nahi kiya (I did not feel like wishing today).”

Her note, set against the backdrop of the Tiranga (the Indian National Flag), read, “As we celebrate our 78th year of Independence and take pride in our achievements as a nation, it breaks my heart to see the frightening reality that women are still not safe in their own country. There is a shocking lack of fear among those who commit these inhumane acts, and even today, women are often blamed for being victims.”

She further emphasized, “Unless we see faster justice, harsher punishments, and more importantly, better upbringing, no change will occur. Are we truly FREE when our basic safety is in question?”

What is the Kolkata Rape and Murder Case?

On August 9, a medical trainee was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Kolkata police took charge of the investigation after the body was discovered the following morning, but progress has been unsatisfactory, leading to the CBI now overseeing the case. In response to the situation, doctors in Kolkata have protested against the complacency of college authorities, culminating in a recent announcement of a 24-hour strike.
