IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack Controversy – Netflix Issues Official Statement and Updates Series’ Opening Disclaimer
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack premiered on Netflix on August 29 to widespread acclaim from both media and audiences. However, as the days went by, some viewers began to voice concerns regarding the code names used by the hijackers in the series. Critics argued that these names could imply that the terrorists belonged to a specific community, which was not an accurate representation of reality. While some netizens pointed out that the code names were indeed those used by the hijackers, a fact corroborated by the Ministry of External Affairs’ website, the controversy continued to escalate.
On September 3, Netflix’s content head, Monika Shergill, was summoned to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Delhi to address the issue. On the same day, a press conference took place in Mumbai featuring the entire cast and crew of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. At the start of the event, the host read the official statement from Netflix regarding the controversy. He emphasized, “This is the only official statement on this matter. There are many reports circulating online, and I urge the esteemed members of the press to focus on this particular statement.
”The statement declared, “To assist audiences unfamiliar with the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814, we have updated the opening disclaimer to include both the real and code names of the hijackers. The code names featured in the series are reflective of those used during the actual event. India has a rich tradition of storytelling, and we are dedicated to presenting these narratives with authenticity.”Following the reading of the statement, the show’s cast members—including Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Dia Mirza, Kumud Mishra, Patralekhaa, Manoj Pahwa, and director Anubhav Sinha—took the stage to continue the event.
