HBD Usha Uthup : 5 tracks of the legendary singer that reflect her exceptional versatility

Usha Uthup, one of India’s most prominent and renowned pop singers, turns 75 today, November 7th. Usha is one of the extraordinary vocalists who selected the pop genre in a nation where classical music is the standard.

She is rightfully recognized as the “Queen of Indian Pop” and emerged as a unique figure in the 1990s. Usha Uthup certainly earned her title and achieved her goal of being successful after walking onto the stage and singing a plethora of hit tracks such as ‘Ramba Ho Ho,’ ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna,’ ‘Hari Om Hari,’ ‘Darling,’ and ‘Koi Yahan Nache Nache’. Her brilliance spoke for itself as she rose to fame as a pop star and collaborated with giants such as RD Burman and Bappi Lahiri.

No doubt, even today, people can’t resist shaking their legs to her hit songs. Her song collection is extremely diverse and impressive, running from vivacious Bollywood music to classic jazz.  Her playlist is still a must-have for any party.

1) One two cha cha cha
Whenever this song plays, you just can’t resist getting up and shaking your legs to this melodious song, ‘One Two Cha Cha Cha’. This song from the 1978 film Shalimar is an amazing offering from her and proves that she can sing different kinds of tracks effortlessly.

2) Rambha Ho Ho
With the composition of another legendary singer, Bappi Lahiri, the song was elevated to new heights by Usha Uthup’s captivating voice. This song from the 1981 film Armaan quickly became a party hit.

3) Hari Om Hari
Another legendary collaboration between Bappi Lahiri and Usha Uthup This song successfully modernized Bollywood dancing. It is from Pyaara Dushman, a 1980 film, featuring Hari Om Hari.

4) Vande Mataram
Karan Johar’s family drama film has everything. There are several versions of Vande Mataram in Bollywood, but this one will give you chills. And why won’t it? It will, as it has the unique voice of Usha Uthup, who can sing almost everything with ease. The song depicts Hrithik Roshan going to London in search of his brother. Usha Uthap collaborated with Kavita Krishnamurthy for this song.

5) Hare Rama, Hare Krishna
Usha Uthup sang an English line in the song ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna,’ which she co-wrote with none other than the renowned singer, Asha Bhosle. She recently spoke on Asha Bhosle getting a chance to sing Dum Maro Dum, where she said, “Gaane Gaane Par Likha Hai Gane Vaar Ka Naam.” Her English accent was different from her other popular Hindi tracks.

6) Koi Yahan Nache Nache
Mithun Chakraborty’s Disco Dancer was a groundbreaking movie. And a significant portion of the credit belongs to its music album. Koi Yahan Aha Nache Nache, sung by Usha Uthup, is a catchy tune that has dominated every party playlist since its release.

7) Darling
Priyanka Chopra killed it in ‘Darling Song’ from the 2011 film Saath Khun Maaf. But what made her do this effortlessly was the voice behind her, which is that of Usha Uthup. Well, this track that gained huge popularity was again a unique offering by Usha as it is based on a Russian folk song.
