Plot/Theme

If you are sick of watching the same old stereotypical portrayal of mothers, then Badnaam Gali, a ZEE5 web film has something different to portray. It has a light-hearted comedy that revolves around the concept of surrogacy. It talks about the journey of a surrogate mother in Delhi, which is played by Patralekhaa and the relations with different people dwelling around her. It is a film with a good message but delivered in a non-preachy fashion. It goes beyond the comedy dealing with the taboos of single mothers or single women and the way these ladies deal with the Indian society who live with some pre-conceived notions. The streaming channel defined the film to be a heartwarming one that pays tribute to the infinite love, tenacity, and sacrifice of motherhood.

Patralekha plays Nyonika a single woman who lives alone and is pregnant. On the other hand,, a young Punjabi Munda Randeep Singh Sodhi (Divyendu Sharma) comes into the picture. He is from a well off family and a man with righteous deeds. The difference with his family members leads him to leave his home behind and reach to Delhi where he soon starts working as a mechanic. Soon he meets Patralekha’s character who is a single and pregnant woman. He stands by her and encounters with people who question the lady’s character. He ensures that people do not remain judgemental about her character and her decision to chose the life of a surrogate mother.

What’s Good

The uniqueness of the story and the way the makers have picked up a progressive story to get rid of the taboo around us is spot on. In the process, they make an earnest attempt at getting rid of the audience’s cliched perceptions about a woman with unexplained pregnancy. Such bold issues were not picked up earlier in film or show that often, hence in this perspective, the content seems to be bold and promising. The way the makers have tried to blend comedy with a taboo and explained the world to get rid of the camp of people who judge anyone first without explanations really works in the film. When it comes to performances, Divyenndu who was seen in B-Town films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Batti Gul Meter Chalu, and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha seemed to have done a decent job as a rustic mechanic who has left his hometown to find some peace of mind in Delhi. Patralekha of Citylights fame, is at the centre of this movie and delivers a marvellous performance. She is able to balance humour and seriousness to great effect, which is a testament to the poise and patience she has as an actress.

What’s bad

It may not be realistically possible to change opinions, views, and ideas of people who love to be judgemental about any taboo issue. Perhaps the short timing of things reaching to the right note seems unreal at some points in this web film.

Badnaam Gali – The Last Word

It is a heartwarming movie on ZEE5 that is the best tribute to endless love and the hustle that come along with motherhood. The film is an emotional roller coaster ride in which the makers beautifully deal with a taboo issue. While doing so, the film adds the smile on your face and makes you leave the idea of #JudgeKarnaManaHai without getting preachy.
