Calendar Girls Movie Review

Good Attempt to Portray The Reality Behind the Glamour Girls

This Friday, you have four movies hitting the theatres hailing from different genres and subjects. One of these includes Calendar Girls, the much hyped and talked movie in the media. The film comes from the reality filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar who has also produced it with Sangeeta Ahir. Calendar Girls have all the new faces in the film, which include Akanksha Puri, Avani Modi, Kyra Dutt, Ruhi Singh and Satarupa Pyne in the lead roles expect the known faces like Ronit Roy and Suhel Seth. The film’s music comes from Meet Bros Anjjan and Amaal Malik, which deals with the life of models who appear too glamorous over the pages of high end calendars.

Story/Plot

As we know Madhur Bhandarkar films are based on real time issues, which mean these are inspired by real life of people and celebrities and Calendar Girls is no exception. As per the director himself, it is a film with 75 percent of reality and 25 percent of fiction. The film deals with the five girls hailing from different regions in India and even one from abroad, who have been chosen to showcase their figure and beauty over the most prestigious annual calendar from a reputed brand in association with a businessman called Rishabh Kukreja and Timmy Sen who is his photographer friend. This film is not about the models and extra shots about what went behind the camera but how things move in the life of ordinary girls who turn extraordinary while getting fame, money and pride/arrogance in their lives. It also shows how the aspiring models and girls willing to do big in life compromise and use their life and other resources to pursue their dreams and how bigwigs in business exploit to meet their ends.

Script Analysis

Madhur Bhandarkar is popular for his penchant for showcasing real time issues of the society over the silver screen. This time he has taken the inspiration from the lives and struggle of the bikini babes who try everything to become the calendar girls. The film is rich in terms of content and well researched while portraying the story of five different bikini girls, yet cannot be called as an everybody’s movie. It is not a conventional cinema which can attract all the section of the society but would interest only who are keen in having a research based story behind the cameras of the high end hot calendar girls. In a sense, you can call it a niche movie, which has all the elements like drama, emotions, fame, luxury, exorbitant and soothing locations and above all hot and sensual babes. If these things attract you then Calendar Girls can be a best bet for you.

Star Performances

Needless to discuss about the novices who made their debut in the film portraying themselves as calendar girls, yet, let’s look at one and all. You have Akanksha Puri as Nandita Menon, Avani Modi as Nazneen Malik from Pakistan, Kyra Dutt as Sharon Pinto, Ruhi Singh as Mayuri Chauhan,    and Satarupa Pyne as Paroma Ghosh. All these seemed doing a decent job over the silver screen while portraying themselves as the bikini babes. As the focus was more on the content hence the filmmaker is smart enough to hire new faces on the silver screen, hence to expect much from them in terms of performance and acting is a futile job. Suhel Seth while playing the character of a businessman tycoon shares good amount of screen space, which gives him the opportunity to act much. He seemed doing a decent job though he is an ad man who deals with corporate, which also include Vijay Mallya so finding enough potential in him to play this character was a wise thought. He is  not an actor, he seemed incredible over the silver screen unlike the bikini babes. Lastly, Rohit Roy was also decent in his character as well.

Direction, Music, and other Technical stuff

There is no doubt that Madhur Bhandarkar is an ace director and he leaves no stone unturned to make really good movies. Though in terms of Calendar Girls, he seemed one step lagging behind for the obvious reasons. Yes the presence of all new girls whom he had non-disclosure contracts were unable to portray the right emotion and sentiments, which was needed to make the right difference. The girls seemed struggling, yet he managed to get a decent performance over the silver screen, which will certainly not question his credibility for sure.   The music seemed okay showcasing the showbiz perfectly and some of the songs are seen doing better over the chartbuster. The other technical stuff like editing, screenplay and locations seemed perfect and went on to boost the overall entertainment value of the film.

Calendar Girls Review Last Word

The Madhur Bhandarkar is an excellent movie in terms of content, story and script, however, in terms of star performance it seemed a bit lagging behind. However, it shouldn’t matter much as far as there is a powerful content in the film, which is worthy to be explored in any film and Calendar Girls is a classic example to this. There is much to enjoy in the film, right from glamour to hot babes, cool music and soothing locations, and above all rich content to enjoy, which is one of the prominent aspects of Madhur Bhandarkar film.
