Kamal Haasan expresses his honest opinion on ‘The Kerala Story’ controversy; claims ‘he is against propaganda films’

Despite breaking several box office records, Adah Sharma- starrer ‘The Kerala Story’ has remained one of the most controversial films of this year. Many filmmakers, actors from Bollywood as well as regional industries have expressed their personal opinion on this film. And now veteran actor-producer and politician Kamal Haasan has reacted to the ongoing controversy of ‘The Kerala Story’.

The veteran actor who is in Abu Dhabi for receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema award at IIFA 2023 shared his opinion on ‘The Kerala Story’ during his media interaction. He said, “I told you, it’s a propaganda film that I am against. It’s not enough if you write a true story just at the bottom as a logo. It has to really be true and that is not true.”

Even before the film was released in theatres, Sudipto Sen directed ‘The Kerala Story’ sparked sevral controversies. The film was also prohibited in some Indian states after its premiere. The filmmakers’ assertion that 32,000 Hindu girls were converted and smuggled to ISIS for terrorism aroused various arguments and issues.  The Supreme Court even ordered the producers to include a disclaimer stating that “there is no authentic data to back up the suggestion that the figure of conversion is 32,000 or any other established figure.”

 Despite various issues, the Vipul Amrutlal Shah funded project did well at the box office and earned Rs. 216 crore. Helmed by Sudipto Sen, ‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bhalani, Sonia Balani, Siddhi Idnani. The film tells the stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala, with the primary focus on Shalini, who is kidnapped and later converts to Islam. Shalini is subsequently radicalized and forced to become a terrorist for ISIS.
