Bhediya Review:

Horror and humor are difficult genres to master on their own. A picture in any category might fall flat unless it has a firm grasp of storytelling and cinematic presentation. And this is where Bhediya shines. Amar Kaushik, who previously directed the horror-comedy Stree under the same company, handles both genres masterfully in his newest appearance and achieves a good balance to offer a film that’s spine-chilling in some places, rib-tickling in practical others, and leaves you with something to think about. Werewolf mythology has always given rich meat to filmmakers’ storylines, and here, Amar Kaushik delves into the deep recesses of Arunachal Pradesh to create a strange narrative.

The visual impact of the film is most notable. While cinematographer Jishnu Bhattacharjee has brilliantly portrayed the dark and intriguing world of werewolves against the backdrop of the full moon in the midnight sky, Ziro forests, and mountains, the visual effects are superb. Because of poor makeup and effects, monsters and creatures in films may frequently become more spoofy than terrifying. However, not in Bhediya. The transformation of the protagonist from human to werewolf is both convincing and terrifying. The film contains numerous jumpscares, and the background score only adds to the terror.

The first part of the film is quite riveting. It properly sets the tone for what is to come and adds a feeling of curiosity. The second half, on the other hand, feels stretched and loses momentum in places. It could use a tighter edit.

Bhediya Star Performances:

Varun shines as the shape-shifting wolf. His act (a large part of which was the physical change with ripped muscles and a flawlessly shaped physique) should help him advance in his profession. He puts his everything to this role, and it shows. Whether it’s the dramatic and high-energy sequence in which he initially transforms into a bhediya, or the humorous scene in which he attempts to get into the werewolf’s skin in the second part — he excels. Abhishek Banerjee, who plays Janardan, alias JD, is spot on with his comedic timing. Even in the most difficult passages, his comedic jabs strike, providing levity to this narrative that takes place primarily at night.

He also has the most amusing lines in the flick. Paalin Kabak, who plays Bhaskar’s Northeastern buddy Jomin, rounds out the bhediya pack and has great chemistry with both actors, especially Abhishek. Deepak Dobriyal, who plays Panda, also gives an outstanding performance. Dr Anika, played by Kriti Sanon, might have been filled out further. She does, however, contribute to the drama and comedy.

Bhediya Verdict:

On another level, the film reminds us of our animal impulses and how every one of us may contain a Bhediya. Overall it is a good watch and you can give it a short.
