It is difficult to tell which role made her more popular Professor Jayanthi or IG Geetha Prabhakar. Well, Asha Sharath definitly made her mark with both the role on Malayalam Television as well as Malayalam films. Known for her dancing skills, Asha is splendid on stage. She won many awards for her dance since her young age and now she is flooded with offers for stage performances in award functions. Besides, she is signing roles in Tamil and Malayalam with caution and care as she does not want to take a wrong step after tasting success with Drishyam.
Asha Sharath Early Life and Family: Born in Perumbavoor, Asha is the daughter of V. S. Krishnankutty Nair and Kalamandalam Sumathy. Born to a mother who was well known as a classical dancer, Asha got dance as her big heritage and excelled in it. She won the esteemed classical dance contest in Benaras in 1992. Asha ‘s entry into Malayalam films was obvious but the dancer , after playing a few insignificant roles, decided to marry following which she settled down in Dubai.
Asha is married to Sharath and the couple has two daughters Uttara and Keerthana.
Asha as Jayanthi in Kunkummapoo: Though Asha was active in TV program production, her acting talent was noticed in the short film Nizhalum Nilavum Parayunathu for which she won state television award for second best actress. This paved the way for her big breakthrough on Asianet TV as Professor Jayanthi in the popular family drama Kunkummappoo. Asha’s portrayal of the agonized mother Jayanthi who keeps her long concealed secrets within herself till death was a character that touched everyone’s heart. The serial was high on TRP despite of its long dragged end.
Thanks to the fame she won as Jayanthi, Asha became a sought after dancer on stage.
Asha in Drishyam: Asha’s role in Mohanlal starrer Drishyam came as a big surprise. Contrast to her character on TV, Asha played an IG who leaves no stone unturned in finding out the truth behind her son’s murder. IG Geetha Prabhakar would not have been so powerful had Asha not been in the character. Drishyam was a record hit in Kerala and was later remade in many south Indian languages and in Hindi with Ajay Devgan and Tabu playing Mohanlal and Asha’s role respectively. In the Kannada version of the film Asha essayed the same role.
Asha in Recent Films: Asha continues to essay roles of mother and likes in Malayalam. But her talent does not limit her to just homely roles. Asha has appeared in recent films namely Angels, Papanasam, Thoonga Vanam, Cheekati Rajyam, Pavada, King Liar, Anuraga Karukkin Vellam and Bhagmati.
Asha has got many nominations and awards for her role of Geetha Prabhakar in Malayalam and Kannada film awards. Even for her role as Jayanthi she was a popular pick for awards and nominations.
