Kuch Kuch Hota Hai turns 24 years old today, and the film’s director, Karan Johar, remembers his hard luck while working on this project. The film made him gain a lot of praise and won several awards. This popular film took the majority of awards that year, and it is still loved by fans. But, while the film was in the making, Rani Mukherji’s role, Tina, was turned down by nine top actresses. It also included Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Tabu.

Karan spoke about the casting of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in Talent Next Launch
He said, “I asked almost everybody. I turned beggar for the film. Eight actresses turned down my request for Rani Mukherji’s role. I thought if no one accepts the role, I will have to wear a short skirt and play that character myself. Eight heroines rejected my proposal and none of them called back after listening to the film’s narration except Aishwarya.”
Twinkle Khanna was the first choice of Karan Johar, and the character was crafted for her actually. After her rejection, he offered it to Aishwarya, Urmila Matondkar, Tabu, and others. Aishwarya had once talked about this with Filmfare. “I was in a dilemma. Even as a newcomer, my comparison is with senior actresses. If I did this movie, they would laugh and tell me that Aishwarya has returned to her old days as a model: wearing shorts, leaving her hair open, and constantly posing for the camera. In the end, the hero becomes a real person.”
We all know that Rani Mukherji’s character dies just at the beginning of the film. Karan Johar’s father, Yash Chopra, said that this was the reason everyone refused to do this film. But, when the film was finally made after a lot of effort, it was a huge hit at the box office.
He then disclosed that SRK and Aditya Chopra had recommended Rani Mukherji after seeing her in Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat. KJo also revealed the difficulty he faced in bringing both Salman Khan and Rani into the film. “I begged both Salman and Rani to join the cast,” he added.
The filmmaker then mentioned his film SOTY and said, “It was an opportunity to take a leap I wanted to.”
