Alia Bhatt Joins Kalki 2 Cast; Report Clarifies She Is Not Replacing Deepika Padukone

The cinematic universe of director Nag Ashwin’s sci-fi mythological epic is expanding. Fresh industry reports indicate that Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt has officially joined the cast of the highly anticipated sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, currently referred to as Kalki 2, starring Prabhas.

The actress has reportedly already joined the cast and crew in Hyderabad for the film’s second major shooting schedule, quietly wrapping up five days of filming. The makers have maintained absolute secrecy regarding her character design, the overall scope of her role, and how she fits into the grand, futuristic narrative.

Sorting Out the Rumors: Alia Bhatt vs. Deepika Padukone

The news of Bhatt’s casting immediately ignited intense speculation online regarding the fate of Deepika Padukone’s character. In the first installment, Padukone played Sumathi (SUM-80), the pregnant woman carrying the final avatar of Lord Vishnu, serving as the emotional anchor of the film.

While internet rumors hinted at a potential replacement or character exit, sources close to the production have clarified the following:

She is not replacing Deepika Padukone. She has been cast in an entirely new, pivotal role designed to drive the sequel’s plot forward.

Amid unverified rumors of Padukone’s scheduling constraints, other prominent names like Sai Pallavi (who recently made her Hindi debut in Ek Din) have also floated around as potential ensemble additions, though the production house has confirmed nothing.

Production Timeline and Visual Effects

Produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, the first Kalki film successfully blended Hindu scriptures with a dystopian, cyberpunk aesthetic in the year 2898 AD, featuring legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan alongside Prabhas.

To live up to the massive cliffhangers left by the original, the team is working on an aggressive schedule. The makers are reportedly eyeing a theatrical release toward the end of 2027. To meet this target, principal photography is slated to wrap up well before the middle of next year, leaving more than a year for the extensive, heavy visual effects and post-production work required to build out the Kalki Cinematic Universe.
