Toxic Suffers Severe OTT Setback as Post-Theatrical Digital Rights Remain Unsold
Following a disastrous run at the box office, the Yash-starrer gangster drama Toxic is facing severe financial setbacks, with industry estimates pointing to total losses exceeding ₹300 crore. The figure represents one of the largest recorded losses for an Indian feature film.
Compounding the project’s financial troubles, the film’s digital streaming rights remain unsold. Prior to its theatrical release, the production team reportedly turned down an offer of ₹150 crore from a leading streaming platform, holding out for a valuation above ₹200 crore on expectations of a strong theatrical performance.
However, following negative audience reception, streaming platforms have drastically reduced their valuations, with current offers dropping as low as ₹30 crore for all-language digital rights. Reports indicate that the highest active bid currently on the table comes from Zee5.
Satellite television recovery for the film is also projected to be minimal due to the movie’s heavy adult-oriented content and rating. To mitigate mounting financial losses, the makers are currently considering creating a newly edited cut specifically for OTT platforms, hoping a revised version might command a higher price during negotiations.
Toxic released in theaters on August 26, opening to ₹120 crore in India before experiencing a sharp decline in ticket sales. The film is expected to conclude its domestic theatrical run under ₹250 crore, well below initial trade expectations.
