Zoya Akhtar Confirms Development of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Sequel

Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has officially confirmed that work on a sequel to her 2011 hit Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is underway. The exciting announcement comes as the acclaimed film marks 15 years since its theatrical release, following renewed fan enthusiasm triggered by a 2025 brand advertisement for Yas Island that reunited lead stars Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, and Farhan Akhtar.

The commercial brought back fond memories of their beloved characters—Arjun, Kabir, and Imran—sparking widespread speculation about a potential feature-length return. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Monsoon Film Festival, Zoya confirmed that discussions are active. “We are on it,” she shared, while clarifying that the project remains in development. She emphasized that the story must feel authentic to revisit the characters naturally: “We don’t know what will happen… if we will get to a place where it feels correct, in catching up with these characters today. But it will be nice.”

Zoya also recalled the intense reaction to the 2025 campaign, noting that many fans initially mistook the ad for an official film teaser. The confusion led to a wave of comedic outrage online once viewers realized it wasn’t a movie trailer. “First, they were like, ‘YEAH!’ But then I got abused in my DMs saying, ‘This was not funny,’” Zoya laughed.

During the conversation, the director addressed recurring criticism that her filmography often highlights the “angst of posh people.” Zoya stated that such critiques no longer affect her, asserting that filmmakers should have the creative freedom to explore diverse lives and perspectives. “These are stories and, as a filmmaker, I get to tell stories of all kinds of people,” she explained.

Released in 2011, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara featured an ensemble cast including Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin, and Naseeruddin Shah. Produced on a budget of ₹45 crore, the film went on to achieve both critical acclaim and massive commercial success, earning approximately ₹153 crore worldwide.
