Why Kalank Failed to Work at the Box Office – Understanding the Economics

Kalank was indeed among the magnum opus of Karan Johar. Thanks to the mighty sets erected to give the classic look and feel for the film along with the ensemble star cast including Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditya Roy Kapur along with Sanjay Dutt, and Madhuri Dixit coming together on the silver screen after a long gap. The film despite having an extended weekend for five days along with the huge amount of screen counts of 4000, Kalank severely remained underperformed over the box office.
So, despite all the mess, what really made the film falter at the box office, let’s try to understand the economics behind the failure. The film with its lavish visuals was made at a whopping cost of 150 crores with the cost of production reaching 130 Cr, and the promotion ads went to 20 Cr. However, despite the buzz, the film failed to work at the box office earning only 78.98 Cr on its box office collection. The earnings went to 21 and rest went to the distributor.
Even after adding the sale of satellite, digital and music rights of the film, the makers were able to make only 140 Cr, which did not help the film to meet the amount invested in it. The stars promoted the film including Alia and Varun even getting clicked with fans and others at the PCR but things really did not turn around. With 146 Crores total revenue, the film was unable to cross the collection of 150 Cr thus getting a loss of 3 Cr, which seems to have pushed the film in the negative direction in terms of ROI.
