Gour Hari Dastaan Story/Plot

The film has a simple and straight story, which revolves around the life of a man called Gour Hari Das, who is a freedom fighter. He works in Khadi craft and lives an ordinary life with his wife and son. Their life is full with contentment in their neighborhood till his son is not given admission in college for not having the freedom fighter certificate. Though he doesn’t need any document to prove his identity to prove his contribution in Indian Freedom Movement, however, with this issue, he decides to prove this on the piece of paper. In order to get this piece of paper, he starts his journey, which brings out to a roller coaster life to him and his family. He faces rejection from every office he approach for this task unless the issue raised by a social activist to see his struggle end for his family. However, how it trails off is worth catching up in the film.

Gour Hari Dastaan Review Script Analysis

It no extraordinary script but a tale of a freedom fighter who has to fight with his own system to prove his worth on the piece of paper. Though we have seen a number of biopic movies made in the past, which is really a different experience for any filmmaker. To showcase the life of a man who has been unknown for years is difficult. At times you may find this film like a documentary but for audience with social genre flavor would like such films at large. The film at the face of it may not sound that attractive but content and message wise, it is worthy film. In nutshell, it is a straight forward and simple script to catch with. No, whistles and rings in it, which can give the glam element to the audience, which makes it a niche audience based film.

Star Performances

Vinay Pathak is seen in the character of this real man and an unknown freedom fighter along with Konkona Sen Sharma playing the character of his wife. You can find the struggle in two phases in the film- one is his struggle against the British and the other with the Indian bureaucracy, which is actually the contemporary one. Vinay was incredible in his performance as always. He is an accomplished actor who got this old fight in a new tone. He has left no stone unturned to step inside the shoe of the character. Thanks to his skills and experience he has, which has helped him to portray such a powerful character over the silver screen so nicely. Similar is the story of Konkona Sen Sharma, as she is competent in playing such characters. She has the expertise of playing the characters right unlike her previous movies with social message.

Technical and other elements

Since it’s a biopic, you cannot expect much from the film. No songs to entertain the audience but just a message and life story of a man who has been unknown to the citizens of India and it also lags behind in terms of other elements. However, the technical elements like editing, screenplay, locations and direction, everything went in a decent way though not remarkable, but that’s not a problem. More focus seems to have given on the content, which speaks more than any other element in the film.

Gour Hari Dastaan – The Freedom File: Movie Review

The film is all about showcasing the life of an unknown man who has remained in the dark since decades despite contributing the best in Indian struggle. It’s ironic in countries like India wherein the real time hero of the nation are seen struggling even for an ounce in their life, while others breed on their celebrity for contributing nothing in the society enjoying all the luxury in the society. Simply ironic in India to have such real heros struggling a lot even for the basics in their life. It’s a simple and straightforward biopic, which is not based on the life of any icon unlike Mary Kom or Milkha Singh, so, the film has only unknown elements in it. Performance wise its incredible and so is the story of content and message.
