Plot

The film is a biopic based on the life of an acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. However, in the film she is called as Malti played by Deepika Padukone. It talks about the 13 years of her life starting from the 12th grade (when she was attacked by the acid) to the hearing court cases. The film showcases the ups and downs along with the support she gets from an NGO activist called Amol played by Massey. She files a PIL to banning the sale of acid and what all she undergoes in her struggle is the story of Chhapaak.
Review
After two brilliant films, Meghna is back with her third film, which is written and directed by her own self. The film has several chilling moments which will compell you to position yourself. These included someone eating food beside her to calling her disabled and insults her and so on. These moments are beautifully captured and presented on the silver screen. Together Gulzar was able to portray a strong climax presenting the story the best.

Talking about the performances, Deepika has left no stone unturned to enter into the character the best. Deepika had a huge task on her shoulder and she was able to deliver the best before the audience. On the other side, Vikrant Massey has only able to get a half-baked character but his efforts to play it genuinely could be seen on the screen. The supporting role of Malti’s lawyer played by Madhurjeet Sarghi is simply phenomenal, while Ipshita Chakraborty was simply brilliant in her cameo.

Chhapaak

Talking about direction, Gulzar seemed lagging when compared to her previous two films Talwar and Raazi. The reasons could be obvious, it is not always easy to retain the sensitivity to this subject, but a lot seems to be missing that we have seen earlier. She had all the elements to produce something incredible, but the blend somewhere went wrong hampering the entertainment value of the movie. The music was okay although not impressive as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have done earlier, while other elements were okay.

Chhapaak Movie Review: The Last Word

The film can be called as a bold statement when it comes to exposing the lenient punishment for bigger crimes including acid-attack. However, it somewhere can showcase the pain and at the same time defocuses the attention with the journey of recovery. Well, we can also see the pain getting stretched a lot to the next level.
