Disney’s “Moana” is the newest addition to the new trend of live-action adaptations of popular animated films. Dwayne Johnson and Disney are bringing the beloved 2016 film Moana to theatres shortly. Normally, it takes at least a decade or two for a popular animated film to get a live-action adaptation, but fans of “Moana” won’t have to wait that long. Disney and Dwayne Johnson made the news via a recorded message from Hawaii.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who performed the original film’s voice over, is producing and possibly starring in the newly announced live action adaptation. “I’m deeply humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude to bring Moana’s beautiful story to the big screen in live action.” This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength”, Johnson said in a statement.

The upcoming film will “celebrate the islands, communities, and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to forge her own path,” according to the producers in an official statement. A release date for the feature film has not yet been announced. Johnson noted in his message that “it’s still very early in the process” and “there’s so much more work to be done.”

As of now, the filmmakers have kept the remainder of the cast and crew’s identities hidden. Auli’i Cravalho, the initial film’s voice actor who played Moana, is also one of the producers. It will be fascinating to see if she plays Moana in the live-action version.

“Moana,” which was released in 2016, was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and the screenplay was by Jared Bush. The film follows the story of a Moana, the daughter of chief Tui, who sets out to meet the goddess after the plants and fish on her island begin to die due to her curse. Moana had grossed roughly 682 million dollars at the global box office.
