Sunjay Kapur’s Passing Creates Succession Crisis at Sona Comstar

The death of businessman Sunjay Kapur has sent shockwaves through both the business and entertainment industries, sparking a mini crisis of succession at his company, Sona Comstar. The billionaire and ex-husband of actress Karisma Kapoor was at the helm of one of the world’s largest auto component manufacturers. His passing triggered a decline in the company’s shares as speculation regarding succession and inheritance began to arise.
Sunjay Kapur’s Business Empire
Sunjay Kapur served as the chairman of Sona Comstar, having taken over after his father’s death in 2015. He played a crucial role in expanding the company into new markets. According to Bloomberg, Sona Comstar has a market capitalization of ₹31,000 crore (nearly $4 billion). Following the news of his death, Business Today reported a 7% drop in the firm’s shares when the markets opened on Friday.
Succession at Sona Comstar
In a statement released shortly after his death, Sona Comstar addressed the situation, stating, “His vision, values, and dedication to excellence have left a lasting legacy for the company. We assure our customers, business partners, employees, and shareholders that our operations and prospects remain unchanged as we honor his legacy.” This was intended to reassure investors that the company would continue to function smoothly.
Sunjay Kapur had three children. His two older children with Karisma Kapoor, Samaira (20) and Kiaan (14), are not involved in the company, while his youngest son, Azarias (6), from his third wife Priya Sachdev, is also not expected to take over management. Although there is no official word on who will lead Sona Comstar moving forward, reports suggest that Sunjay’s sisters may step into management roles while the existing board retains authority.
Inheritance of Sunjay’s Wealth
At the time of his passing, Forbes estimated Sunjay Kapur’s net worth at $1.2 billion (₹10,300 crore). His peak wealth was valued at $1.6 billion (₹13,000 crore) in both 2022 and 2024. By law, the management of his estate will pass to his wife, Priya Sachdev. However, his children with Karisma Kapoor are also well provided for; reports indicate that Sunjay had arranged bonds worth ₹14 crore for them and ensured a monthly income of ₹10 lakh each as part of his legacy planning.
Sunjay Kapur was married to Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016 and previously to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani from 1996 to 2000. Since 2017, he had been married to model-turned-actor Priya Sachdev. The 53-year-old passed away from a heart attack while playing polo in London on Thursday.
