The original film, Stree, released in 2018, received widespread critical acclaim and achieved commercial success. Alongside Rao and Kapoor, the movie featured notable performances by Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurrana, and Abhishek Banerjee. The music of the film also garnered significant attention, with tracks like “Milegi Milegi” and “Aao Kabhi Haveli Pe” becoming chart-topping hits.Directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, Stree 2 is part of a horror-comedy universe that includes other successful films like Stree, Roohi, and Bhediya. In a review by Shomini Sen of WION, Pankaj Tripathi and Rajkummar Rao’s performances were praised, highlighting the film’s feminist approach in the second half.
The narrative explores an urban folklore inspired by an incident in Bangalore, portraying a utopian world where men dress like women to ward off the ghost, wives are asked to return home quickly out of fear, and women instruct their men not to venture out alone. The film introduces an extraordinarily quirky ghost, with Rudra’s statement emphasizing her consent-based actions: “Yeh Stree hai, purushon ke tarah zabardasti nahi karti, anumati leti hai” (Unlike men who force, this ghost is a woman who waits for consent). It’s a refreshing take on supernatural encounters. As fans eagerly await the release of Stree 2, the film promises to offer another thrilling and comedic experience, building upon the success of its predecessor and expanding the Stree universe.
