Sooraj Barjatya Reacts to Winning National Award for Uunchai: ‘I Feel I’ve Truly Climbed My Everest Today

The winners of the 70th National Film Awards were announced today, with Sooraj Barjatya taking home the Best Director award for his beloved film Uunchai (2022). Known for his endearing family dramas, Barjatya shared his thoughts exclusively with Bollywood Hungama regarding this prestigious recognition.Reflecting on his journey with Uunchai, Sooraj Barjatya remarked, “When I embarked on this project, many told me it wasn’t my typical style. It lacked lavish sets, grand song and dance sequences, and festive costumes. However, Uunchai came straight from my heart. I didn’t choose the story; it chose me!
Today, I am grateful to that story for granting me my first National Award for Best Director. This has been a beautiful journey for both me and my film, culminating in a perfect moment.”When asked about his feelings regarding the award, Barjatya expressed, “I am humbled to be recognized among the finest talents in Indian cinema for 2022. It takes me back 30 years to when Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994) won the National Award for Best Film. The exhilaration I felt back then was overwhelming! Now, receiving the Best Director award for Uunchai brings a sense of gratitude and tranquility.
My joy today is more introspective. For the past 35 years, my role has been to tell stories, and I have no intention of stopping; there’s much more to share!”When asked what the National Award means to him, he smiled and said, “These awards unite our industry, celebrating films in every language. Winning Best Director at this stage fills me with profound humility and honor. I feel as though I’ve conquered my Everest. This recognition belongs to my entire team of talented actors and technicians who persevered through the pandemic and filmed in unprecedented locations.”On dedicating the award, Barjatya stated, “Since Uunchai was created in the 75th year of our production house, I dedicate this award to Rajshri Productions and to my elders in the family. They have guided us in crafting stories that inspire joy and foster trust in the goodness of humanity.”Uunchai features a star-studded cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa, Neena Gupta, Sarika, and Parineeti Chopra.
