Sonam Kapoor Becomes First Indian Star to Speak Out Against Bangladesh Protests, Calls Them ‘Terrible

Sonam Kapoor has once again emerged as a vocal figure in the realm of political discourse, becoming the first Indian star to address a pressing issue. On Monday, she took to Instagram to express her concern over the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, describing the situation as “awful.” The country has been engulfed in protests and violence since last month, primarily driven by student organizations advocating for the abolition of a controversial quota system in government jobs.
In her post, Sonam shared an update from The Juggernaut, highlighting the alarming statistic that 66 people lost their lives in a single day amid the clashes. “This is terrible. Let us all pray for the Bangladeshi people,” she wrote, as the death toll has now tragically surged to 100.On Sunday, police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to quell the unrest, resulting in at least 91 deaths and over 100 injuries. In response to the escalating violence, authorities imposed a statewide curfew starting Sunday evening, suspended train services, and halted operations in the country’s extensive textile industry.

Originally sparked by demands for the quota system’s removal, the protests have morphed into a broader movement aimed at ousting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who secured a fourth term in a boycott-riddled election earlier this year.  The death toll from Sunday’s protests, which included the tragic loss of at least 13 police officers, represents the highest daily fatalities in Bangladesh’s recent history, surpassing the 67 deaths reported during previous student-led protests on July 19. In the midst of these events, Sonam Kapoor is currently residing in London with her husband, Anand Ahuja, and their son, Vayu. Recently, she attended a Wimbledon match and the Taylor Swift Era performance. Her last film, Blind, failed to resonate significantly with audiences. Stay tuned for more only with us.
