Shaitaan OTT Review: Ajay Devgn’s 150 Crore Box Office Hit Gets 3.2 Million Views in 48 Hours, Yet Ranks Below Laapataa Ladies on Netflix – Here’s Why

Ajay Devgn’s horror film Shaitaan, featuring R Madhavan, Jyothika, and Gujarati actress Janki Bodiwala, made its debut on Netflix this week and quickly garnered 3.2 million views within just two days. Directed by Vikas Bahl, this horror flick began streaming on the popular OTT platform on May 4. Shaitaan’s Netflix debut week has been nothing short of impressive, with a significant number of viewers flocking to watch the film. The star-studded cast, coupled with the captivating storyline, has undoubtedly piqued the interest of audiences. As the film continues to captivate viewers, its success on the streaming platform seems to be a promising sign for its future.
Since its release on May 4, Ajay Devgn’s film Shaitaan has garnered an impressive 3.2 million views and 6.9 million viewing hours on Netflix. These numbers are exceptional considering they only account for a 48-hour streaming period. Currently, the film is trending at number 4 on Netflix’s global charts. However, Laapataa Ladies, which premiered on April 26, outperformed Shaitaan this week and is trending just above it at number 3 globally, with around 5.6 million views. Interestingly, while Shaitaan was a box office hit, grossing 150 crore, Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies only earned 15 crore and was considered a flop. So, why did the tables turn when both films arrived on Netflix? Let’s decode three reasons for this.
  1. Imbalanced Number of Days: The 3.2 million views for Shaitaan were accumulated in just two days of Netflix’s data cycle, whereas Laapataa Ladies had a complete seven-day run to accumulate its 5.6 million views. Therefore, Laapataa Ladies has performed better this week due to its longer streaming period.
  2. The Competition: This week, Netflix saw the release of various new content, including the 7-hour series Heeramandi and the Telugu film Tillu Square, among others. Shaitaan faced tough competition as viewers had a wide range of options to choose from. On the other hand, Laapataa Ladies had a more favorable environment when it premiered on the OTT platform.
  3. The Fan Base: Although Ajay Devgn’s film Shaitaan could have achieved higher numbers considering the hype surrounding it, Laapataa Ladies received terrific word-of-mouth on the day it dropped on Netflix last week. This positive buzz has continued to work in its favor, contributing to its success on the OTT platform.

In conclusion, while Shaitaan’s performance on Netflix is commendable, Laapataa Ladies has managed to outshine it this week due to its longer streaming period, lesser competition, and strong word-of-mouth.
