Why Shahrukh Khan needs another Swades or Chak De India?

Shahrukh is mostly known for his commercial entertainer movies. In the recent years, his films like Ra One, Chennai Express and Happy New Year have all made the audiences laugh and cry with him. But does the audience want to see more of such commercial roles by Shahrukh? While the Khans on the other side namely Aamir and Salman also taste success one after the other, Shahrukh needs to bring variety in his roles and give a critically satisfying performance. Of Course he has many such films in his kitty at all stages of his career but, it is high time now that he delivers something exceptional to go ahead of others.

Shahrukh has recently associated himself with commercially acclaimed directors like Farah Khan and Rohit Shetty who fail to impress the critics or produce quality films. What these filmmakers bring up is such roles for Shahrukh that do not do fully justify his talent. Remember how much we loved him for his role of Mohan in the Ashutosh Gowarikar film Swades. He played the ambitious NASA scientist who gradually develops his interest and attachment to his own motherland and decides to settle down there. The film is a milestone in his career which was subtle yet powerful and spoke volumes about the actor’s ability. Later he followed it up with a remarkable performance in Chak De India that was about the estranged hockey player Kabir Khan who takes up the charge of the women’s hockey team. He brings the erring women’s team to the right path and eventually leads them to a Major Victory. We loved him in this role of the stern and austere coach who barely smiles but speaks inspiring words whenever he opens his mouth. He swept all the awards that year.

In the early phase of his career, Shahrukh experimented with roles that were of different shades. Not everyone wanted to play a Psychopath lover when he portrayed such characters in Anjam and Darr. Few know that Aamir Khan was initially offered the role of Rahul in Darr. After Aamir refused to play the role fearing to develop a negative image, Shahrukh in an exemplary manner came out good with the role.

With Aamir Khan striking gold with films like 3 Idiots, Taare zameen Par, Dhobhi Ghat , Talash there is awareness that it is necessary to deliver quality alongwith entertainment. But Shahrukh apparently fails to do this.
