Subtle Content & Star Cast Yet It Remains an Untold Story

Water is indispensable element in human being’s life and is one of the vital subjects for B Town movies for the audience. Considering the importance of this subject, Nila Madhab Panda had decided to go with the movie with lead stars like Kunal Kapoor and Radhika Apte along with Gulshan Grover and Saurabh Shukla. The film showcases the important issue of water of one of the backward states of India along with the backdrop of a love story witnessed in the film just to add certain masala in it. The film is of 110 minutes run time and seems to be an intelligently executed movie weaving a satirical tale around this idea. Now, let’s check the crux of the film as under:

Story/Plot

The film is set around the mid eighties over a fictional village based in the interiors of Orissa, which has the regime of Singhdeos since ages. The real drama unveils when the ruling king’s sister is seen falling in love with a local boy belong to a low cast, which witnesses the most obvious consequence of this love story- the brutal murder of this young man. Since then things between start becoming bad to worse wherein the two villages Upri and Bairi plan to divide themselves into two halves by constructing a wall in between. The wall therefore becomes a symbol of hostility between people living on its either side. Upri belongs to the ruthless and wealthy people, while Bairi has farmers who are exploited by the higher community.

Back to the present day situation, Upri is witnessing a very server water crisis, while Bairi has loads of water thanks to their modern irrigation methods, which helped them to conserve water the best. In the backdrop to this situation, Brij Kishor Singhdeo played by Saurabh Shukla who conspires a lethal plan with his son Prince Raj played by Kunal Kapoor and Paru played by Radhika Apte the daughter of Kharu Pehalwan the aspiring politician. Then begins the unending actions from them to achieve their vested interest and how things proceed is interesting to catch up in the theatres.

Script Analysis

The strength of this movie lies in its subject, which seems very much thought provoking that makes the hooked from the very first scene. Though finding a funny cum conniving kind of king with having no control can be a far-fetched idea to many but the director has left no stone unturned to offer all the details of his past. Unlike the kids of seventies, this very king has also witnessed the transformation of the society with the help of financial and technological growth. However, you will find his legacy taking a pause from shedding the kind of orthodoxy and short sightedness it witnesses. This character can be called as the backbone of this film.

Star Performance

Saurabh Shukla while playing the morally corrupt king can be called as a real treat to watch in the movie. Despite knowing his limits, he never leaves a single chance to be one of his own rivals. He has been incredible in his performance while playing this character, which has both humour and negative attributes of a villain in it. Next is Gulshan Grover, playing the aspiring politician, can be called as the real hero of this movie. He is simply brilliant while playing the character of Kharu Pahelwan the liberal leader of the lower caste village. Kunal Kapoor on the contrary is a young prince who is known to do his job in a decent manner. Though there is nothing much extraordinary thing, which Kunal has added in his character yet was seen giving a regulated act and has done all the things, which was expected by his director. Last but not the least, Radhika Apte now seems to be the face of art movies, however, she has disappointed with her mediocre performance.

Direction, Music and other Technical Stuff

The director seems impressive when it comes to implement the idea perfectly over the silver screen. One of the interesting elements of his films is the simplicity and Kaun Kitney Paani Mein is no exception. It can be a treat watching a film when the director puts his efforts to prove that he can make some meaningful movie, and he has gone too far while making this film. The film seems dragging in the first half, however, the momentum is seen in the second one. As far as music and other technical aspects are concerned, these appear to be an okay exercise.

Kaun Kitney Paani Mein Last Word

The subject of water is evergreen and can be used in varied ways while making any film. However, it can be called as a good attempt, yet seems to be lagging behind in many ways. With such a strong star cast, making a much more higher and rich standard film was possible. Hence one call this film as the half baked attempt. Though the satire found in this film seems to be good, however, the film simply fails to rise above it. Hence in many ways, the film seems slow and would demand patience from the audience to catch the film in any theatre. Thus despite having a good idea, subject and cool star cast, the director has failed to embark with a cool movie, which means it doesn’t really deserve a better rating.
