Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s most-awaited romantic drama ‘Shakuntalam’ finally hit the theatres yesterday, 14 April. Given the film’s extensive promotional campaign and huge buzz on social media, the first-day box office collections have been below average, with the movie earning only Rs 3 crore net in all four languages. Reportedly, the film got an overall occupancy of 32.60 per cent in the Telugu states.

Shakuntalam was released in Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam in addition to its original Telugu language; nevertheless, based on early trends, the film’s dubbed versions did not draw large crowds on its opening day and only managed to rake in Rs. 57 lakhs in all three languages.

Shakuntalam below average opening at the box office can be attributed to the mixed response from fans and critics. Despite the below average opening at the box office, it’s still too early to declare it a flop solely based on its opening day collections as it’s collections could pick up steam in the coming days.

The film is based on Kalidasa’s acclaimed Sanskrit play Abhijnana Shakuntalam. Samantha’s film revolves around the epic love story of Shakuntala, daughter of sage Vishwamitra and Apsara Menaka, who was in love with King Dushyant, portrayed by Dev Mohan. Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Gunasekhar, the film also stars Mohan Babu, Jisshu Sengupta, Madhoo, Gautami, Aditi Balan in pivotal roles.
