Ramayana to Hit International Theaters First on November 6, India Release Set for Diwali
Producer Namit Malhotra has officially confirmed an unusual and strategic release plan for the upcoming epic cinematic saga Ramayana. In a recent interview with NDTV, Malhotra outlined a staggered global rollout that splits the release dates between international territories and the domestic Indian market.
Because the festival of Diwali falls on a Sunday, November 8, audiences across India will experience the film in theaters directly on the festival day itself. This aligns with traditional Indian holiday box office scheduling, allowing domestic fans to celebrate the festive occasion by watching the cinematic adaptation on the big screen.
In contrast, international markets will receive the film two days earlier on Friday, November 6. Malhotra explained that this adjustment accounts for standard global distribution practices, which rely heavily on Friday theatrical openings in overseas territories rather than traditional weekend holiday slots.
The project features a massive ensemble cast led by Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, renowned for his work on Dangal, the film is produced by Namit Malhotra. The music for the multi-part franchise is composed by the acclaimed duo of A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer.
Behind-the-scenes distribution and partnership deals are already falling into place for the high-profile project. Dharma Productions has acquired the domestic distribution rights for India, while Sony Pictures will manage international distribution overseas. Additionally, T-Series secured the music rights for both parts of the franchise in a major advance deal reported at ₹75 crore.
Ramayana is structured as a two-part epic. The first part is scheduled to hit theaters globally in November 2026, culminating with the Indian release on November 8, while the second installment is slated to arrive on the big screen during Diwali 2027.
