Ram Gopal Varma Criticizes Indian Filmmakers in Blistering Post: “We Amplify Their Dumbness”

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has once again ignited discussions with his candid critique of the current state of Indian cinema. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Varma drew comparisons between Indian filmmakers and their Hollywood counterparts, particularly praising Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the concluding chapter of the globally acclaimed spy franchise led by Tom Cruise.
In his post, Varma stated, “The difference between them and us is they assume the audience to be intelligent and elevate their intelligence with films like #MissionImpossibleTheFinalReckoning. Conversely, we assume the audience to be dumb and further degrade their intelligence, aiming to reach even the most uninformed viewers with films like ____________.”
The difference between them and us is they assume the audience to be intelligent and push their intelligence further up, by making films like #MissionImpossibleTheFinalReckoning
On the contrary we assume the audience to be dumb and we push their dumbness further down in the hope…— Ram Gopal Varma (@RGVzoomin) May 18, 2025
While he left the final thought open-ended, many followers expressed their disappointment with the filmmaker’s perspective, especially considering his own recent work. Social media users quickly filled in the blank with titles from Varma’s filmography, such as Agyaat, Aag, D Company, Department, and Sarkar 3, which have not resonated well with audiences or critics. Some comments highlighted Varma’s tendency to critique Indian cinema while praising Hollywood, with one user noting, “We Indians have a habit of downgrading our own work while hyping mediocre offerings from the international market.”Varma is known for his outspoken views on the film industry, often making provocative statements regarding commercial entertainers and the growing reliance on CGI-heavy action at the expense of strong screenwriting and character development.
His recent comments, however, seem to draw a stark comparison between Indian filmmakers and the legacy of Hollywood franchises, particularly in praising Mission Impossible. As for Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, it is anticipated to be Tom Cruise’s final performance as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, this film serves as the conclusion to a two-part finale, following Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023). The new installment, which also features Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, and Ving Rhames, was released in India on May 17.
