Rajat Kapoor is not an unknown name in B Town. He is a popular actor, writer and director of B Town. He is born and brought up in New Delhi in 1961 coming from a non film background. He did his schooling from Delhi. Since his childhood, he was very much keen in watching films and hence at the age of 14 he decided to become a filmmaker. However, he focused on acting at first and thus was seen joining a theatre group in 1983 called Chingari based in Delhi. He later headed to Pune to join a course in FTII (Film and Television Institute of India).
With a passion to make a career in acting and filmmaking, he headed to Mumbai the city of dreams., he was seen starting his own Parallel Cinema, which gave him the opportunity as a debut in a movie called Khayal from Kumar Shahani in 1989. He then faced trouble in finding acting jobs hence then was seen doing other jobs like writing and directing short films in the nineties. In 1997, he made his debut in direction with a film called Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One, which carried Irrfan Khan and Naseeruddin Shah in smaller roles. In 2001, he got the chance to work in a big break movie called Dil Chahta Hai along with Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Khanna.
This gave him another movie from Mira Nair called Monsoon Wedding, which made gave him recognition for his critical acting. Since then he has been writing, directing and producing movies. These include Corporate, Bheja Fry and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, etc. His first full fledged directorial debut is Ragbhu Romeo, which is produced after getting money from his friends. This film gave him a National Award for the Best Feature Film category. He then directed Mixed Double, which dealt with the issue of wife swapping found in Modern Bombay. Some of his recent films, in which he acted, directed or written include Carpet Boy, Midnight Children, The Owner, Agent Vinod, etc, while his upcoming movie include Drishyam starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu.
Apart from the big screens, he is also a regular face over smaller screens. Rajat Kapoor appeared as host in a tri weekly chat show called Lounge aired at NDTV Good Times, while has worked in a TV series called Milan aired in Zee TV and Rishtey TV respectively. He was seen with a smaller roles in a popular Zee TV series called Kabhie Kabhie. As far as awards are concerned, he has been awarded thrice with National Award for his films like Tarana, Raghu Romeo and Hypnothesis. As far as his personal life is concerned, he is married to Meena Agarwal and have kids Rabia and Vivaan.
