R. Madhavan Responds to Dhurandhar Backlash: “Don’t Take a Jibe at the Industry Like an Outsider”
R. Madhavan has opened up about the mixed reactions surrounding his recently released film Dhurandhar, co-starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar. In a candid conversation with Esquire India, Madhavan reflected on the film’s journey, the criticism it faced, and the resilience of the film industry. “When I heard about Dhurandhar and saw the meticulous research done by Aditya Dhar—the fearlessness of the filmmaker and the uniqueness of his storytelling—I knew the film would make an impact,” Madhavan shared. “Some people would initially give it bad ratings, while others would eventually recognize its value and say, ‘Wow, this happened.’
”Madhavan didn’t shy away from addressing the negativity that surfaced even before the film’s release. “You are free to express your opinion, but when obituaries were written before the film even premiered, and reviews called it a disaster on release day, one wonders if there’s an agenda behind it,” he remarked. He also highlighted the emotional toll such criticism takes on those within the industry. “As actors, we thrive in these situations, but please remember—whether you like or dislike a film or a person, we are a very close-knit, sometimes lonely family. Don’t take a jibe at the industry like an outsider.
We already have enough of those.”Dhurandhar, released on December 5, 2025, is the first part of a two-film series. Written, directed, and co-produced by Aditya Dhar under Jio Studios and B62 Studios, the film features a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi.
Inspired by real geopolitical tensions and covert R&AW operations, the movie has been praised for its gripping narrative and high-octane action, performing well at the box office.
