Ponniyin Selvan 2, the epic historical drama, is doing extremely well at the box office. The Mani Ratnam-directed film, which stars Chiyan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Prakash Raj, earned Rs. 24 crore on its first day at the box office. According to the latest statistics, the picture maintained a strong hold on the box office over the weekend, earning Rs. 26.20 crore nett on Saturday and Rs. 30 crore nett on Sunday, bringing its total first weekend collection to Rs. 80 crore nett.
These are really good numbers if you look at the box office performances of other big budget films this year, but the numbers are still significantly lower than the first part of Ponniyin Selvan (2022). The first part had minted Rs. 113 crore nett at Indian box office in its first weekend.
The positive reviews and word-of-mouth might help boost up the box office for the epic historical drama. The film is made on an estimated budget of Rs. 250 crore thus it must maintain the same hold for at least two weeks to be considered a blockbuster. The eventual target of the film will be beating up the first part’s box office numbers.
The first-part of the epic-drama took the box office by storm when it was released in September 2022. It grossed more than Rs. 500 crore and became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022, and the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of all time.
