Thalaivii Review: Kangana Ranaut’s film is full of stellar performances with a few glaring hiccups!

Star Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Arvind Swami, Nassar, Bhagyashree, Raj Arjun, Poorna

Director: A. L. Vijay

Critic Ratings: ⭐⭐1/2

Story:

Based on the life of Indian politician and film actress J. Jayalalithaa, the film showcases the story of a young girl who made her way from the big screen to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s chair. The story starts and we see Jayalalithaa fondly called Amma to many is getting suppressed by others in the parliament. Well, those who have seen Amma know there is something hidden in the chest. The story unfolds very fast and so does the journey of Jayalalithaa.

We see the transformation of turning Jayalalithaa into Amma. ‘I hate politics’ she made it clear in her stance but who knew that life has something else planned for her. Jaya, who didn’t want to enter politics gets into it only to support her reel-life hero M. G. Ramachandran aka MGR (Arvind Swami). And the rest is what they say is history. The film exactly shows us the same in the film. Jayalalithaa’s journey of rising and shining to be Tamil Nadu’s, Chief Minister.

Review:

Biopics have so much to do with it since people relate to it all because of the honest story. But everything gets disturbed when that extra Bollywood tadka adds in and makes the story tasteless. The film seems very fast. Those who follow politics or know the journey of Jayalalithaa must feel that there are so many parts of her life that were left untouched. For example her much-controversial jail term, her real rise & fall in the world of politics.

Jayalalithaa’s life was an epic tale and it was very difficult for the makers to unfold it in just 150 minutes. There are a plethora of things that happened in her lifetime which was so interesting to tell put the makers couldn’t add it in the film. A. L. Vijay made his way clear with a decent direction but K. V. Vijayendra Prasad‘s screenplay could have been more apt.

Performances:

Kangana Ranaut is undoubtedly a superstar when it comes to acting. She makes you believe that she is Jayalalithaa. Be it her accents, looks, or physical attributes she did a commendable job. She proves that she is the perfect choice for the film. If the boat was saved from sinking then it was all because of Kangana.

Even though Arvind Swami as MGR’s character was a lot dependent on Jayalalithaa’s character. Arvind nailed his part with utmost perfection.

Nassar as Karunanidhi had so much potential but the makers failed to use it maturely.

Bhagyashree plays Jayalalithaa’s mother and did a decent job, what else could we expect from a veteran well-accomplished actor.

Raj Arjun stands out with his brilliant performance. He surprises us as he becomes MGR’s ‘cold-hearted lieutenant’ R. M. Veerappan.

Poorna as Sasikala had a limited screen presence but was good on her part.

Final Words:

If theatres in your town are open you can go and watch the film to see some amazing acting. But don’t go with huge expectations.
