Approximately after a quarter century passed away from the Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen which received a massive worldwide buzz, the next buzzing news in this concern is the upcoming web series, titled Phoolan Devi. This upcoming web series will be directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, with Tannishtha Chatterjee who will be playing the role of a protagonist.

The epochal film producer, Bobby Bedi, has already firmed up his plans for the 20-episode web series on the life and death of Phoolan Devi who was known to be the dreaded Chambal dacoit and later turned into a Member of Parliament and her assassination that took place in the heart of Delhi in July 2001.

Revealing the secrets on the sidelines of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, Bedi mentioned that the web series, Phoolan Devi will undergo production within the next few months. It is planned to spread out the entire series into two seasons, each with 10 episodes.

Bedi further mentioned, “The first season will end with Phoolan’s eight-year prison term, while the second will largely cover the years in the aftermath of her release. Her prison term was extended by four years, but within two years of her release she became a Member of Parliament. There is a great deal of Phoolan Devi’s that remains to be covered. Bandit Queen hinged on how a woman had to suffer huge indignities in rural India on account of being low caste. It focused on crushing caste oppression. In an urban setting, conversely, she demonstrated the political power of a low-caste woman.”

Idealizing the sequel to the Phoolan Devi story in order to take the Phoolan Devi story forward into the web space, Bedi mentioned his intentions saying, “Then the web space opened up and we realized it would be the best option because it allows the storyteller all the time to develop characters and settings.”

Bedi has picked Tannishtha for the role of Phoolan Devi who is a bright pass out from the National School of Drama and holds a pretty optimistic side with her. The actress is however, currently wrapping up her first directorial venture, Roam Rome Mein will be coming on board as soon as she was convinced that the web series would be totally unlike the Bandit Queen in tone and relative substance.

Speaking about her being part of Phoolan Devi, Tannishtha recalled , “I saw Bandit Queen a few years after its release. This was in Poland, such was the impact of the film. The new production is neither a sequel nor a remake the format is long enough to allow us to handle a wider canvas of the Phoolan story.”
