Animal Debate Deepens: Vishal Bhardwaj Expresses Mixed Feelings – ‘I Found It Enjoyable Yet Disconcerting

December 2023 marked the release of Ranbir Kapoor’s highly anticipated film, “Animal,” directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Alongside Kapoor, the movie also stars Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Tripti Dimri. While the film achieved great success at the box office, it has generated mixed reviews and sparked polarizing opinions among audiences. Some criticized the movie for its violence, while others praised it for its entertainment value, performances, and music. Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has recently shared his thoughts on the Ranbir Kapoor starrer, adding to the ongoing discussions.

“Animal” revolves around a toxic father-son relationship portrayed by Anil and Ranbir Kapoor. Not only a section of the audience but also several celebrities have voiced their criticism of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film. Renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar has been particularly vocal about his disapproval of “Animal” on multiple occasions. Even Konkona Sensharma has expressed her lack of admiration for the Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna starrer. However, Vishal Bhardwaj’s opinion is quite intriguing, as he finds himself torn between loving and hating the film.

During an interview with Firstpost, Vishal Bhardwaj shared, “I have not yet made up my mind about how I feel about that film. Because I enjoyed it and, at the same time, I hated it. I think ‘Animal’ is all that you mentioned. It has all the elements, and it also features a typical hero. It’s one of the biggest hits of all time. People still watch it and still want that kind of movie. It’s a big surprise that there is a huge audience for that genre of film as well.”

Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director of “Animal,” has not remained silent in the face of criticism. In an interview, he dismissed those who labeled the Ranbir Kapoor starrer as misogynistic, calling them “jokers.” Moreover, the story of “Animal” will continue in its sequel, “Animal Park,” as teased in the end-credit scene of the movie. Fans may have the chance to see two Ranbir Kapoor characters in Vanga’s film. Production of the sequel is expected to begin in 2025.
