Mrs.’ Criticized for ‘Feminist Agenda’; Sanya Malhotra’s OTT Release Faces Backlash

Sanya Malhotra’s recent OTT release, Mrs., has attracted considerable attention for its portrayal of the challenges women face and the societal expectations surrounding arranged marriages. However, the film has come under scrutiny from the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), a prominent men’s rights group. The foundation has accused the film of promoting a feminist agenda, arguing that while women’s issues are frequently highlighted, other vulnerable groups—such as children, men, the elderly, and individuals with physical or mental disabilities—are often neglected in cinematic narratives.
In a social media post, SIFF stated, “Women’s issues are consuming 80% of the attention regarding policies meant to protect millions of vulnerable individuals.” They further emphasized their concerns on X (formerly Twitter), questioning the focus on women’s suffering while suggesting that other groups face significant challenges as well. They wrote, “Women are suffering, but children are not facing any abuse in families. Women are suffering, while men are not encountering any crimes. Women are enduring abuse, but senior citizens are not experiencing harassment within families.

With over 38.7K followers on X, the group also shared their views on household responsibilities, asserting that men should not be expected to share household chores equally. They claimed that “70-80% of material possessions, including clothing and furniture, are desired and enjoyed by women.” In another post, they dismissed the stress associated with household tasks, stating, “What stress does a woman experience while chopping vegetables or doing dishes? Zero, nothing. Cooking is like meditation.

Regarding the film Mrs., it stars Sanya Malhotra as Richa, an aspiring dancer married into a patriarchal family where she is reduced to performing household chores. Ultimately, Richa resists her oppression. Released on Zee5, the film also features Nishant Dahiya and Kanwaljit Singh in significant roles and is directed by Arati Kadav, adapted from the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen.
