Matka King Trailer Out: Vijay Varma Builds a Gambling Empire in 1960s Bombay

Prime Video has officially unveiled the trailer for Matka King, a high-stakes period drama set against the backdrop of post-independence Mumbai. Starring Vijay Varma as the titular “King,” the series is scheduled to premiere exclusively on the streaming platform on April 17, 2026.

The Rise of a Gambling Legend

Set in the 1960s, the series follows the journey of Brij Bhatti (Vijay Varma), a cunning cotton trader with an ambition to escape his modest life. The trailer depicts Bhatti’s transformation of “Matka”—originally a niche pastime for the elite—into a massive gambling enterprise that captures the imagination of the entire country. However, as his power grows, the stakes become increasingly dangerous, threatening to consume everything he has built.

A Stellar Creative Team

Directed by Nagraj Manjule and created alongside Abhay Koranne, Matka King promises an authentic and gritty portrayal of old Bombay. The series features a strong ensemble cast, including Vijay Varma as Brij Bhatti, Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar and Gulshan Grover

In the Words of the Lead

Vijay Varma described the project as an “exhilarating journey,” marking his return to Prime Video following the successes of Dahaad and Mirzapur.

“Bringing this character to life was both challenging and deeply fulfilling, especially in the backdrop of an era I had never explored before,” Varma shared. “At its heart, Matka King is a story of ambition, power, and the price one pays for success.”

Kritika Kamra also hinted at a transformative role, noting that the series challenged her to explore a world of “choices, ambitions, and resilience” unlike anything she has performed previously.

Global Premiere

With its fast-paced narrative and rich period detail, Matka King is positioned as a major digital release for April. The series will be available to audiences in India and across more than 240 countries and territories starting April 17.
