Losing sense of smell can be a signal of death: Study

The senior citizens are often seen reducing their ability to smell any odor. If this is the case, then the situation is bad for them as the death can grab them at any point of time. As per the recent studies, people losing the sense of smell can be at the higher risk of death, which can last the maximum of four years. The study was carried out by an Indian origin scientist, who was seen carrying out a study having 1169 older adults who were seen with this problem of losing smell witnessed the trend of losing their lives soon when they lost this sense. With this the mortality rate goes down, which was proved in the study conducted by the independent researcher.

As per the study, the increased in the death risk is seen increasing progressively with the worst kind of performance seen in the smell identification test and was noted the highest among the ones with the worst kind of smelling capability despite having the medical burden and dementia getting adjusted. As per the researcher Dr. Davangere Devanand hailing from the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry which is an important division at Department of Psychiatry based at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Columbia University discussed the report in detail at the journal Annals of Neurology. However, the big question arises, people with younger age having similar problem too are closer to bed or not, remains unanswered.
