Karan Johar Responds to Criticism of Nadaaniyan

Producer Karan Johar has addressed the trolling and harsh criticism directed at Nadaaniyan, a romantic comedy film featuring Khushi Kapoor and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Positioned as Khan’s debut film, Nadaaniyan is produced by Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital arm of Dharma Productions. Currently streaming on Netflix, the film has faced considerable mockery for its perceived poor writing and execution.
Karan Johar acknowledged the critiques, stating, “People who know me understand that my relationship with film critics remains unchanged regardless of what they write. It’s their right and their job. I don’t subscribe to conspiracy theories suggesting they are on a mission to bring down a film.” However, he expressed disappointment regarding the harsh language used by some critics.
“One critic wrote about Nadaaniyan: ‘I want to kick this film.’ When you express yourself like that, I have a problem,” Johar remarked. He emphasized that such language reflects poorly on the critic rather than the film itself. “It’s disturbing because those who appreciate intellectual cinema should possess a sensitive and compassionate side. No one deserves to be kicked because that implies violence.
In the real world, words can be just as damaging.”Johar made these comments during the trailer launch of his first Punjabi production, Akaal: The Unconquered, held in Mumbai on March 18. This historical drama celebrates the valor of Sikh warriors and is both written and directed by Punjabi actor-singer Gippy Grewal, who also stars in the film alongside Nimrat Khaira.
Akaal is slated for release on April 10, 2025, just ahead of Vaisakhi, in both Punjabi and Hindi. Johar’s banner, Dharma Productions, previously produced the historical action film Kesari, which also centered on a true story of Sikh resilience.
