Kangana Ranaut Takes a Dig at ‘Mrs.’; Blames Bollywood for Distorting Marriage

On Sunday, Kangana Ranaut shared a series of Instagram stories criticizing films that, according to her, promote divorces and negatively influence perceptions of marriage. While she refrained from naming any specific film, many believe her remarks were aimed at Mrs., the Hindi remake of The Great Indian Kitchen, starring Sanya Malhotra as a frustrated housewife in a misogynistic household. While the film received support from women for addressing patriarchal norms, Kangana expressed concern over its messaging, claiming such narratives “corrupt” societal views on marriage.
In her first note, Kangana reflected on her upbringing, praising Indian joint families and the traditional role of women. She wrote, “Growing up, I never saw a woman who didn’t command her household. Women like my dadi, mumma, and chachi were ultimate queens, controlling everything from meals to family hygiene. Let’s not generalize Indian families or demonize elders. And let’s stop comparing homemakers to paid labor.”In another story, Kangana emphasized the role of marriage in fulfilling duties toward the elderly and children. She stated, “Marriages are not for validation or attention-seeking; they are for the vulnerable, like the elderly and newborns. Bollywood love stories have distorted the purpose of marriage, which is rooted in Dharma—duty. Do your duty and move on; life is too fleeting.”Her final note warned against dismantling social institutions like marriage, urging people to focus on spiritual fulfillment rather than worldly pleasures.
She concluded, “True joy lies in being united with paramaatma. Let’s not endorse divorces, abandon older parents, or discourage having children. Our joint families are our strength.”However, Kangana’s remarks sparked backlash online, with many accusing her of hypocrisy. One Reddit user questioned, “Why doesn’t she get married, have kids, and fulfill her dharma?” Another alleged, “She’s just scared another curly-haired girl will take her place, like she did with Taapsee and now Sanya.”Meanwhile, Mrs. has drawn attention for its bold narrative, sparking discussions on a wife’s role in patriarchal households. The film, which released on OTT, is a remake of the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen.
