Kangana Ranaut Criticizes Punjabi Politician for Backing Protests Against Emergency, Labels It ‘Harassment’

After a lengthy struggle to depict India’s tumultuous period of emergency, the political thriller Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut as the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has received clearance from the censor board and was released in cinemas across the nation on January 17. However, the film is facing significant opposition from the Sikh community in Punjab, prompting Kangana to voice her concerns on social media.
Despite the absence of any legal ban on the film’s release, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has lodged objections, claiming that the movie misrepresents and defames the Sikh community. They have also sent a letter to the Punjab Chief Minister expressing their grievances. In response to a politician’s post on social media that echoed these sentiments, Kangana criticized the opposition and accused them of harassment. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kangana stated, “This is complete harassment of art and the artist.

Many cities in Punjab are reporting that these individuals are preventing Emergency from being screened. I have immense respect for all religions, and having grown up in Chandigarh, I have closely observed and followed the Sikh religion. This is a complete lie and propaganda aimed at tarnishing my image and sabotaging my film #Emergency.
The tweet was a reaction to a post by Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who expressed support for the SGPC’s call to ban the film, labeling Kangana a critic of farmers and Sikhs without acknowledging their contributions to the country. Khaira urged the Chief Minister to take immediate action to prevent the film’s release, citing its negative portrayal of Sikhs and its potential to defame Punjab.Amidst these tensions, the SGPC has escalated its protests, demanding a complete ban on Emergency and organizing demonstrations outside theaters to ensure the film does not screen in the state.
