Kamal Haasan Confirms Thug Life’s OTT Release 8 Weeks After Theatrical Run

Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, A R Rahman, Silambarasan T R, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, and Ashok Selvan gathered at a multiplex in Mumbai for a press conference to promote their highly anticipated Pan-India film, Thug Life. Recently, reports emerged indicating that the film would be available on a digital platform after completing eight weeks in theaters—a notable move, as most Tamil films typically transition to OTT platforms after just four weeks.
The major national chains, including PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis, enforce a strict eight-week release rule, generating excitement within the trade community regarding this development. The extended theatrical window is expected to enhance Thug Life’s chances of success, particularly for its Hindi version.
During the press conference, when asked about the reports, Kamal Haasan confirmed their accuracy. He stated, “It’s not even an experiment. It’s a pragmatic thing to do. I am glad the OTT platforms agreed, and we sat together. It was not a negotiation; it’s a plan that maybe others could follow. It’ll make the industry healthier. We are pleased to be the first to seize this opportunity.”This announcement comes at a time when Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video just two weeks after its theatrical release, with national chains making an exception due to court intervention.
Kamal Haasan also addressed box office expectations for Thug Life, stating, “We are not focused on ‘how big’ it should be, but it shouldn’t be ‘how small’ (laughs). We need to think about break-even because this is a business. Mani is from a business school, and I’ve grown up in this industry. You can’t disrespect business while engaging in it.”Thug Life is set to hit cinemas worldwide on June 5. Stay tuned to know more about it and others only with us.
