Mirai Mumbai Press Meet: Karan Johar Reflects on His Shelved Historical Film Takht

At the press meet for their film Mirai in Mumbai, Karan Johar, alongside Apoorva Mehta, director Karthik Gattamneni, producer T G Vishwa Prasad, and actor Teja Sajja, opened up about his unrealized ambitious period project Takht. When asked if he would like to make a historical film, KJo recalled his plans for Takht, which was set to star Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, and Anil Kapoor.
Karan Johar shared, “I was on the verge of making a period historical film. But due to various circumstances, including the pandemic, the project came to a halt. I had researched it for two and a half years, and Sumit Roy had written the screenplay. It was just very heartbreaking when I couldn’t make it at that time. So, I did dabble.”He added, “I guess every film has its own time. It’s also about fate—when you are meant to tell a particular story. I’m still very young; that was a joke (laughs). But maybe, somewhere along my journey, there will be a film like that.”
Reflecting on the technical demands of such grand storytelling, Karan said, “I firmly believe that the kind of technical finesse and passion required to tell a story of this magnitude is something I’m not sure I’m capable of. When I see filmmakers like Karthik Gattamneni telling these stories, I feel like a student rather than a filmmaker. Watching the brilliance of Baahubali and witnessing the passion behind Mirai, I realize I don’t know if I’m capable of that. It’s always better to acknowledge your weaknesses than to pretend they’re strengths.”Mirai is set to release in cinemas on September 12.
