Housefull 5 Shines at the Box Office with Unique Dual Versions
The comedy caper Housefull 5 performed impressively at the box office over the weekend, raking in more than Rs. 80 crores. However, this film isn’t just another laugh riot; it also incorporates a murder mystery element, with the unique twist of releasing two versions: Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B, each featuring different endings and a different murderer. This innovative strategy not only captured attention but also sparked conversations around the film.
In our analysis, we’ll explore whether this dual-release approach benefitted the makers financially. On release day, it was evident that audiences preferred Housefull 5A, prompting distributors to adjust showtimes. Initially, the plan was to divide screenings equally between the two versions, with three daily shows for 5A and two for 5B in single screens. However, by the weekend, many theatres began reducing 5B’s showings in favor of 5A.
Bollywood Hungama conducted a survey of cinemas nationwide on Sunday and Monday. For instance, Cinepolis Thane featured 28 shows of 5A and 10 shows of 5B on Sunday, with the numbers shifting to 29 shows of 5A and 7 shows of 5B on Monday. In contrast, MovieTime Hub Goregaon decreased 5B’s shows from 5 to 3 from Sunday to Monday.
In other regions, the disparity was even more striking. Cinepolis P&M Mall in Patna hosted 12 shows of 5A and only 1 show of 5B on Sunday. Similarly, PVR Logix, Noida had 23 shows of 5A compared to 13 for 5B, with 5B’s shows dropping to 11 by Monday.
Some cinemas, like Miraj Wadala in Mumbai, maintained an even split between both versions, offering 6 shows for each. However, others, such as Cinepolis Mohali, completely eliminated 5B from their schedule, running 16 shows of 5A instead.
As the weekend progressed, it became clear that Housefull 5A was the audience’s preference, leading to significant adjustments in cinema scheduling across the country. The unique dual-ending strategy may have created initial intrigue, but it ultimately resulted in a clear winner at the box office.
