Popular filmmaker and the director of the Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gully Boy’ has recently confirmed the sequel of this blockbuster movie. Gully Boy is inspired by and loosely based on the stories Indian street rappers Divine and Naezy, who both have contributed to the lyrics, music and raps in the movie itself. Director Zoya Akhtar feels that the Indian audience needs to be introduced further to the rap culture, and that’s why she has confirmed the sequel to Gully Boy.
In an interview with Deccan Chronicle, Zoya has said, “My co-writer Reema Kagti and I do feel there’s so much more to be said on the entire hip-hop culture in our country. And another film exploring the theme is being scripted and planned.” When asked about her brother Farhan Akhtar, she confirmed that he will not be a part of the sequel’s cast as well. She said, “He just didn’t fit into Gully Boy. And we’re both sorry about it.” She further added about her Rock-On actor brother, “Also, his image from the Rock On series is affiliated to an entirely different genre of music. It would have been a bit of a culture shock for the audience to suddenly see him swerve from stadium-rock to hip-hop.””
Gully Boy has been perceived as one of the best performances of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s respective careers. From the teaser itself, the film sparked an interest and curiousity, especially among the youth of the country, with the never-been-potrayed-before rapping culture in India. In the movie, Ranveer Singh potrayed the gully rapper Murad, while Alia Bhatt stepped into the role of the strong Safeena. Both won the hearts of the audiences as the film hit the box office and theatres throughout the country. It also proved to be another feather in the cap of director and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, who is known to always make different and innovative films, like the recent Netflix movie Lust Stories, to thsuperhit Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do.
