Stand-up comedy acts have exploded in popularity in recent years thanks to the internet. More and more people seem to be drawn to the videos, and some even look forward to seeing their favourites play live. Purchasing tickets to see the top stand-up comic is the latest craze, and it’s catching on quickly. Others of them have even had their own independent shows and film ventures, and some have even made it to the big screen.
Here’s a list of artists/comedians who have recently made the leap from music to film and television.
1. Kapil Sharma
Kapil Sharma, India’s favourite prime-time stand-up comedian, launched his own celebrity chat programme, ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil,’ in 2013 and quickly became a household figure. He went on to star in films like ‘Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon’ and ‘Firangi,’ which were both commercially and critically successful. Kapil has progressed to the point where he is both the producer and the channel of his show, ‘The Kapil Sharma Show.’ The comedian’s stand-up special, ‘I’m not done yet,’ was recently released on Netflix. That’s exactly what we’re saying, Kapil! We’re not finished with you yet!
2. Prajakta Koli
Prajakta Koli, a young Youtube sensation, began her career in comedy in 2015 with the launch of her YouTube channel. Parajakta managed to carve out a name for herself early on in her career by focusing on relatable and observational videos based on one’s daily life events. Since then, the comic has had the opportunity to appear on internet comedy series such as ‘The Comedy Premium League’ and ‘Tune in with Tanmay.’ Not only that, but Prajakta also dabbled in acting with the Netflix original ‘Mismatched,’ which will be followed by a sequel this year. ‘Jug Jug Jeeyo,’ a Bollywood blockbuster, has also signed the comedian.
3. Bhuvan Bam
Bhuvan Bam, an Indian comedian, writer, singer, musician, and YouTube celebrity from Delhi, rose to prominence with his humour channel BB Ki Vines on YouTube. The multi-talented artist has accomplished a new milestone by starting his own production company, Dhindora, which features him in the lead position. The sitcom went on to be a huge hit, with almost every episode receiving an IMDB rating of 9 or above. Kudos to you, Bhuvan!
4. Mallika Dua
Mallika Dua, an Indian comedian, actor, and writer who has been dubbed the “Tinder aunty,” rose to prominence after the viral film “Sht People Say: Sarojini Nagar Edition,” which she wrote, styled, and starred in. Mallika has been a popular favourite in India’s stand-up comedy scene since then. Mallika went on to star alongside some of the industry’s top comics in programmes including Amazon Prime’s ‘Comicstaan’ and the Netflix exclusive ‘The comedy premium league.’ Mallika made her cinematic debut with a modest role in the 2017 mega hit ‘Hindi Medium,’ and went on to play big roles in films such as ‘Namastey England’ and ‘Indoo ki Jawaani.’
